FYO Experience

In my final blog post I would like to discuss my overall experience with this FYO. I am so happy that I chose to take this mini-course because it has really opened my eyes to a new culture and has brought a new appreciation for learning about other cultures into my life. I never understood why my mom is so hooked to her soap operas, but now that's a different story. I talked to my mom about my telenovela and how I couldn't stop watching at that I want to buy more off of Amazon once I'm done with Corazon Salvaje. I must admit that in the first class I was really skeptical about watching a Telenovela because I did not think I would like it but as the saying goes "Don't judge a book by its cover", and to my surprise I have literally fell in love! I thought that telenovelas were the exact same as soap operas except they were from Latin American countries, but boy was I wrong! Soap Operas have no central story line while Telenovlas have a main plot and sub plots and I can literally tell the diffference now when I watch Soaps with my mom.  Learning about the different components and aspects of different cultural Telenovelas helped me better analyze my Telenovela for my paper. I think that my telenovela in particular used a lens to magnify the issues that the upper class face when it comes to family values and morals, but it also distorted other things such as what type of government was in place at the time. The discussions in class have been really interesting and helpful in me writing my paper. On a final note I would like to say I am really going to miss having this class on Mondays. I'm going to miss the in-class discussions as well. I am extremely excited that I will be able to take this new learning experience with me for the rest of my life and hopefully I can take a full-length course of this class before I graduate from the University of Georgia.

  1. I enjoyed the class as well! Being in the class made telenovelas more than just entertainment because we got to look at all the different aspects of it. My telenovela was a lens and window into the upper class in Mexico city too. However, it showed that citizens with money can get away with whatever they want, including murder.

  2. I thought it was interesting when you said you plan on taking a full-length course of telenovelas, because I also do too! Discussing telenovelas is fun and even though we didn't get to do much of that in class, I do hope we will get more of an opportunity to do that in a 3 or 4 credit course. OR, I wonder if there is a telenovela club set up here at UGA? If not, we and some other interested people could start it and it would be like a book club where we all follow a particular novela. I think I would really enjoy that because I liked analyzing my novela throughout the course and wondering about what would happen next.

  3. I must agree with you, this has been my favorite class for the semester and perhaps the year! To be quite honest I was wary of telenovelas before I had ever watched one. I expected it to be superficial and so over-dramatic that I would not be able to take them seriously. However it was just the opposite, the drama made the situations seem more believable and in turn I liked the show even more.

  4. I agree with this entirely. When I first chose this class, it was half because I thought it sounded interesting and half because it happened to be one of only a handful that fit with my schedule. However, now that the class is over, I have really come to appreciate this class on Mondays. I have never before thought of all the work put into making a television show/soap opera/telenovela, and this class has helped me look at this in a new light. It was especially interesting to gain this new perspective through the views of telenovelas made from other cultures.

  5. I also have to agree with you! This class has been wonderful. I am now more aware of the way that families from other cultures entertain themselves. I was also able to connect more with one of my close friends here in college because of this class. I listened to his experience of watching telenovelas upon his arrival to the country and how that helped him deal with a new life. He told me that him and his parents used to sit in a one bedroom apartment and just watch telenovelas together because he was not able to understand the cartoons in English. For me hearing this made me realize that to many people here in the country telenovelas have a real impact in their lives.
