Teresa, Not Your Typical Protagonist

There were underlying hints of Teresa's character throughout the novela. The sharp music that would play whenever she was asked questions she had lied about would attract attention to her not-so-good characteristics. The rage and frustration she exhibits in front of her family whenever money is talked about does not fit in with the typical rosa telenovela stars. She is different. Teresa represents a darker side of a Cinderella story as she tries to escape her poverty.

Overall, Teresa is different than most leading characters in telenovelas. She isn't quite the "good girl" and I like that. Within the first couple episodes, I noticed her great ambition to overcome her socioeconomic obstacles. Money clearly drives her in her journey of this novela. This novela, it seems to me, will show the journey of Teresa as she transforms from being a naive, poor girl to being manipulative and evil.

The telenovela Teresa stands out from a long list of past and current novelas because of the different approach taken in the protagonist view. The story of the telenovela is interesting and entertaining and the cliff-hangers make me want to keep on watching from break to break and episode to episode.

  1. I totally agree with your view of the "typical protagonist" Generally speaking, the characters have underlying characteristics that viewers like us have to unravel in order to find. That is what makes a show interesting to me. I personally wouldn't favor watching a show when the qualities of all the characters and the plot were given up front. More mysterious characters draw viewers in rather than a predictable and boring character. Different approaches of the protagonist view makes telenovelas more fun to watch!

  2. Having to figure out the characters, to me, is definitely half of the fun . I do enjoy when the protagonist isn't your typical Cinderella. In Una Maid en Manhattan, the protagonist deals with money issues as well. She tries to refuse her love for Cristobal because they're on two different levels. However, she learns to accept that. Her character is not becoming devious, but she is learning to confront the conniving, scheming characters head on; she's not taking any sass from them anymore!

  3. My main character in the telenovela that I am watching isn't the typical protagonist either. Well first off, it took me until past the halfway point to realize who were the protagonists and antagonists. One of the protagonists goes by the name Juan de Diablo, which doesn't sound to heroic or sentimental. As the story progressed I began to see that he was a good person, but his circumstances portrayed him as something evil, in which he wasn't.
